Suspended is a site-specific work reflecting on the intimate relationship between mother and child. It is my first interdisciplinary work incorporating performance art, experimental sounds, musicians, string instruments, re-purposed objects and video. Suspended is a work that took some years to conceptualize. The work challenges the imagination and represents a woman’s womb and a temporary moment of suspension in a human being’s life as it lies in the mother’s womb, perceiving its first experiences of the world. I was inspired by my mother’s telling of her own pregnancy and my realization of the fragility of life upon her death and how this single most immaculate moment of her life and a seemingly a very natural experience meant the world to her. It is my acknowledgement of life’s intimate instances chosen to be elevated to a new realm and understanding of my own fragility.
